Yellow Jersey: review summary

RideIn’s assessment: The tiered range makes the distinction between everyday riding, trips and racing relatively easy to investigate. Security limits, eligible riders and the separation between bicycle and medical travel cover still need close attention.

Who is behind Yellow Jersey?

Yellow Jersey is a trading style of The Plan Group Limited, publishing FCA reference 307249. The brand says it grew from a family-run insurance brokerage, and its own history records a 2014 launch. Its terms of business distinguish arranging bicycle and travel insurance from providing advice on business insurance.

The brand name, intermediary and underwriter are separate things to check. Yellow Jersey’s information zone identifies the underwriting arrangements by policy start date. Match the insurer in the wording issued with a new quote or renewal rather than treating an old article or policy as evidence of the current contract.

Essentials, Performance and Ultimate compared

Essentials targets everyday leisure riding and commuting, with theft, vandalism and accidental damage. Its product page specifically removes racing, sportives and overseas riding from that package. Performance broadens the intended use towards enthusiasts and European trips. Ultimate is the competition-focused tier.

A sensible comparison begins with your calendar. A UK commute, European training camp, charity sportive and triathlon raise different questions. Do not use the word leisure to describe an organised event simply because you do not expect to win: ask how the policy defines that event.

Bicycle limits, family use and additional equipment

Yellow Jersey’s main comparison publishes a £15,000 single-bike limit and £50,000 total policy value, with theft, damage and liability benefits across the range. Its FAQ limits lending cover to specified immediate family members who permanently live with the policyholder. A casual loan to a friend should therefore be checked before handing over the bicycle.

Read the allowance for accessories and whether extra wheels, helmets and clothing need optional cover. A total collection limit is not the same as the maximum for one bicycle or one item of equipment. Keep an updated list when bikes or expensive parts are added, removed or replaced.

  • Check ownership and the eligible rider definition.
  • Record each bicycle and the total insured value.
  • Ask how custom builds, spare wheels and hired bikes are treated.
  • Confirm age restrictions for personal accident benefits.

Cycling holidays, racing and medical cover

Yellow Jersey’s information zone describes annual Performance bicycle cover for European trips up to 30 days, and Ultimate for worldwide trips up to 120 days. It also states that bicycle-policy public liability is not provided in the USA or Canada. A worldwide bicycle benefit does not imply worldwide liability on identical terms.

The business sells separate cycling travel insurance for risks such as medical expenses and repatriation. If cycling or racing is the purpose of a trip, check the correct activity category, destination and duration for that separate policy. Confirm packing, airline transit and unattended storage under the bicycle policy as well. Do not infer that buying one product activates the other.

Lock ratings, unattended time and storage

Yellow Jersey’s FAQ requires an appropriate Sold Secure-rated lock through the frame to an immovable object when the bicycle is unattended away from home. It describes different unattended-time allowances by tier. Match the rating to your bicycle’s value and use the security guide supplied for the contract you are buying.

Consider the complete parking period, not just the time you expect to be away from the saddle. A bike left at a station before a long workday and a late return can approach a time limit. Do not assume a locked vehicle, shared bike room or supervised transition area follows the same rules as a private room in your home. Ask for written clarification where the storage arrangement does not fit the examples.

Premium, excess, cancellation and valuation

Obtain a quote for the bicycle values, tier and options you actually need. Compare the final annual cost, any short-term alternative offered for your situation, payment charges and cancellation terms. A renewal or multi-bike discount should be assessed against the total premium, not as a saving in isolation.

Essentials advertises no depreciation and a capped claim excess, while the FAQ describes how a standard theft or damage excess is calculated. The schedule is the place to establish your actual amount. Ask which valuation basis applies to a used bike or a discounted purchase, and how a repair, replacement or cash settlement would be handled. Read the terms of business for administration and cancellation charges before treating an unused period as fully refundable.

How to make a Yellow Jersey claim

Yellow Jersey says its bicycle claims are handled by its in-house team. To start, sign into the customer area and select the claim option beside the relevant policy. A bicycle claim and a medical travel claim use different processes; follow the right set of instructions and use the emergency contact in your travel documents when appropriate.

Prepare ownership records, frame details, incident photographs, lock evidence and any police reference after a theft. For damage, retain the bicycle and obtain repair instructions. The contact page also asks customers claiming taxi reimbursement to keep receipts and photo evidence. Check eligibility before assuming an expense will be paid, and retain a copy of everything submitted.

Yellow Jersey strengths, drawbacks and alternatives

Yellow Jersey is a useful comparison for cyclists whose event calendar and travel plans make the choice of tier material. The distinction between sportives and races, the country visited and the maximum length of each trip can matter more than a small premium difference.

The limitations to examine are the exclusions in the lower tier, rider eligibility, security conditions and the separate need for medical travel protection. Compare Ultimate with the appropriate racing products from Bikmo, Laka and Cycleplan, using the exact event rather than a broad racing label. This is a published-information review; we have not bought cover or tested the claims service and do not award a customer-service score.
