Compare the total cost and an affordable repayment schedule. Credit is subject to status and affordability checks; advertised rates and offers can change. Missed payments can damage your credit record.

Which bicycle finance options are best to compare?

For an eligible bicycle at the same purchase price, straightforward 0% retail finance can avoid interest. For a used bike from a private seller, an unsecured personal loan offers more buying flexibility. If the bike is for commuting, ask your employer about Cycle to Work before taking out credit. These are different routes with different ownership and eligibility rules.

Our selection covers two established bicycle-finance providers, three cycling retailers with dedicated finance programmes, and two general personal-loan providers. It is a research-based shortlist, not an exhaustive market ranking. A provider’s advertised rate does not establish the rate you will receive.

Tredz, Ribble and Giant are retailers or brands arranging credit, rather than three additional independent lenders. Their offers are separated here because the bicycle range, cash price and eligibility for finance differ. Read the linked reviews and official terms before comparing a final quote.

Compare the total pounds payable, not just the APR

Use the exact same bike, size, components and required accessories. Add the deposit, every repayment and any fees. Then compare that total with the available cash price. A lower monthly figure can simply mean you stay in debt for longer.

These are mathematical illustrations, not offers or lender quotes. The interest-bearing example assumes monthly amortisation, a monthly rate of (1.10)^(1/12) − 1, no fees and 24 equal payments, with the calculated total rounded to pennies. Real agreements can use different payment dates and rounding. A discounted cash price can change the comparison even when the borrowing carries interest.

Allow separately for a lock, servicing, tyres and insurance where needed. For electric bikes, read our e-bike ownership costs guide. A stolen or damaged bicycle does not automatically cancel repayments; check both the credit agreement and any bicycle insurance.

General UK loan companies can also finance a bicycle

Tesco Bank: compare only if the minimum loan fits

Tesco Bank publishes personal loans from £3,000, so it is not a match for every bicycle purchase. Its advertised 6.6% representative APR applies to £7,500–£25,000 over one to five years. Obtain terms for the amount actually needed; do not borrow thousands extra simply to reach a lower rate band. Check permitted use, eligibility and settlement costs in the current Tesco Bank loan information.

Nationwide: a general loan for eligible members

Nationwide requires an eligible current account, savings account or mortgage held for at least 14 days. It publishes different rates by amount: for terms of one to five years, the £1,000–£2,999 band is 14.4% representative APR, compared with 5.9% for £7,500–£25,000. This illustrates why a large-loan headline is a poor guide to bicycle borrowing. See its rate table and application criteria.

A general unsecured loan may suit a used bicycle or a shop without instalment finance, provided its terms permit the purchase. Compare personalised quotes for the same amount and term. Representative APR means at least 51% of accepted applicants must receive that rate or better; it is not a guarantee of acceptance or your individual rate. MoneyHelper explains personal-loan comparisons.

Ask your employer about Cycle to Work before borrowing

Cycle to Work is an employer arrangement for eligible bicycles and safety equipment, often through salary sacrifice. It is different from receiving a cash personal loan and immediately buying a bike outright. HMRC’s exemption requires equipment to be available generally to employees and mainly used for qualifying work journeys. See HMRC’s bikes-for-employees guidance.

Ask HR or payroll whether your employer participates, which provider and shops it supports, and what budget is available. Request an illustration for your own pay and the precise agreement. There is no universal saving: tax position, scheme charges, bicycle price and any later ownership transfer all affect the result.

  • Who owns the bicycle during the arrangement, and how is ownership handled afterwards?
  • What happens to payments if you leave the employer or your pay changes?
  • Does salary sacrifice affect other pay-linked benefits, and can payroll offer it within minimum-wage rules?
  • Are the chosen bicycle, equipment and retailer eligible?
  • Who is responsible for security, maintenance and loss during the hire?

Other ways to cover the cost

Saving towards the bike, choosing a less expensive model or buying a carefully inspected used bicycle can reduce or remove borrowing. A credit union may offer smaller loans; compare its actual total against the alternatives. A purchase credit card with an introductory 0% period only stays interest-free if you meet its conditions and repay in time. Confirm that the seller accepts the payment method and understand what happens after the promotional period.

Individual bicycle finance provider and retailer reviews

Novuna bicycle finance review

An option to compare for a used bicycle or a purchase from a seller without finance. An eligible 0% retail offer can cost less if the bicycle price and repayment period also suit you.

V12 Retail Finance bicycle finance review

Useful for comparing a participating shop’s instalment offer on a specific bicycle. The retailer’s price, term and finance conditions determine value, rather than the V12 name alone.

Tredz bicycle finance review

A multibrand finance route to compare once you know the exact bike and price. Longer interest-free terms require substantially higher spending; avoid upgrading the basket just to extend the term.

Ribble bicycle finance review

Relevant if a Ribble bicycle already fits your riding and budget. Compare the final configured build, deposit and total payable before choosing a term.

Giant bicycle finance review

A brand-specific route worth examining for an eligible Giant bike. Check the exact model’s offer: the general finance page does not guarantee that a sale bicycle receives the headline 0% terms.

Checks before choosing bicycle finance

  1. Choose a bicycle that fits the journey and rider. Use our bike buying guides and geometry tools.
  2. Set an affordable total budget, including essentials and existing commitments.
  3. Ask your employer about Cycle to Work and compare the whole arrangement.
  4. Compare the exact cash purchase with retailer finance and an eligible general loan.
  5. Use soft eligibility checks where available; confirm when a full application creates a credit search.
  6. Read the lender’s pre-contract information, repayment dates, charges and early settlement terms.
  7. Check the legal firm with the FCA Firm Checker before giving financial details.

Bicycle loan questions

Can I get a loan for an electric bicycle?

Yes, eligible personal loans and cycle retail finance can cover e-bikes. Check the lender’s permitted use and the retailer’s offer. Financing a bicycle does not establish that it is legal for road use; our UK e-bike legal checker explains the relevant vehicle checks.

Can I finance a second-hand bicycle?

A suitable personal loan can fund a private purchase, whereas retail finance normally needs a participating seller. Budget for an inspection and maintenance, verify the seller’s ownership evidence and check the actual frame number before paying.

Are bicycle loans available with bad credit?

Acceptance and pricing depend on the lender’s credit and affordability assessment. None of the options here guarantees approval. Avoid repeated full applications and compare eligibility information first. If existing repayments are already difficult, seek free money guidance before adding borrowing.

Is bicycle finance always 0%?

No. Some eligible retail plans charge no interest; other retail plans and personal loans charge interest. A delayed first payment is not automatically an interest-free loan. Check the deposit, repayment schedule, deferred-interest rules and total payable.

Which is the best bicycle loan company?

There is no single winner for every buyer. Compare the offer for your actual budget: an employer scheme, a qualifying interest-free retail plan and a personal loan can each produce a different result. We explain the limitations beside each option rather than assigning unsupported star ratings.
