Cycleplan: review summary

RideIn’s assessment: The selectable approach can help you avoid buying benefits you already have. It also makes quote checking essential: a feature advertised on the website is not proof that it has been added to your policy.

Who owns and operates Cycleplan?

Cycleplan describes itself as specialist cycling insurance through Ripe. Its legal information identifies the brand as a trading name of Ripe Insurance Services Limited, company 04507332, publishing FCA reference 313411. The current bicycle product information names Hiscox Insurance Company Limited as underwriter.

Ripe arranges the insurance; that role is different from carrying the insured risk. Read the terms of business together with the insurance wording to identify who administers each benefit, where claims go and which complaints process applies. A policy may have separate arrangements for legal expenses.

What can Cycleplan cover?

Cycleplan’s published range includes bicycle equipment protection plus options addressing liability, injury-related benefits and events. Work from a written list of essential losses, then compare the completed quote. The upper limits on a product page are available maximums and may be higher than the amount selected.

The website advertises bicycle theft and damage cover up to £30,000, accessories up to £1,000, public liability up to £5 million and personal accident up to £50,000. Loss of earnings, replacement hire, competitive use, race fees and travel options are also listed. Benefit definitions, waiting periods, eligibility and sublimits need checking in the wording; these figures are not a promise that every policy includes all benefits.

Important exclusions: delivery work, ownership and competitions

The current product summary excludes trade or business use apart from commuting, including courier work, hire, reward and carrying paying passengers. It also says public liability is unavailable to under-16s. A family bicycle may be eligible for equipment cover without every rider qualifying for every personal benefit.

Competitions require the relevant option, additional premium and schedule endorsement. A race entry does not itself activate cover. Keep evidence that you own the bicycle, accessories and approved lock; an ownership record is a claim requirement, not merely an optional precaution. Discuss an employer-owned Cycle to Work bike or other non-standard ownership before purchase.

Cycleplan approved locks and storage conditions

Cycleplan’s approved-lock information uses the insured bicycle value to set the required standard. Check the exact threshold and model against the current policy documents before buying a lock. At home, private rooms, outbuildings, shared areas and balconies are treated differently; a generic statement that your bicycle is indoors does not describe the full risk.

For away-from-home storage, check how the frame and quick-release wheels must be secured to an immovable object. A shared residence can require additional locking even behind a secured entrance. Photograph your real storage setup and ask the provider to confirm anything unusual rather than assuming a workplace rack or communal cage is acceptable.

Cycling abroad, events and separate medical protection

Cycleplan lists European and worldwide options, with a 45-day limit for each trip where that territorial cover is selected. Confirm the destination, transit arrangements and event use in the schedule. Cover for a bicycle overseas does not by itself pay an injured rider’s medical or repatriation bill.

Consider a practical scenario: a ten-day holiday with ordinary rides, a race abroad and paid guiding are three different uses. A territory extension alone does not answer competition or business-use questions. Check your medical travel policy separately and obtain acceptance of the cycling activity before relying on it.

How much does Cycleplan cost?

There is no single Cycleplan price suitable for every cyclist. The required equipment value and chosen benefits affect the quote. Compare annual totals for equivalent cover, and add any borrowing charges if the premium is financed through instalments. A low monthly instalment is not necessarily the cheapest total payment.

Read the excess for each claim category, the cancellation conditions and whether a previous claim changes a refund. Cycleplan’s document library separates wording by policy start and renewal date; it currently includes documents for new policies from 11 June 2026 and renewals from 10 July 2026. An old saved booklet can give the wrong answer even when the brand name is unchanged.

How to claim and prepare supporting evidence

Use Cycleplan’s current how-to-claim page or the instructions supplied with your policy. First establish which benefit you need to claim: equipment damage, theft, injury, earnings or legal costs may require different evidence or contacts. Record the policy number, incident date and an accurate account of what happened.

For theft, keep the police reference, ownership records, approved-lock evidence and photographs of the storage location. For damage, retain the affected items and obtain instructions about inspection and repair estimates. Save receipts for any expenses you intend to claim. Notify the provider promptly in accordance with your contract rather than waiting until every document is available.

Cycleplan strengths, limitations and alternatives

Cycleplan is useful to investigate when you want to select benefits individually and compare the result against existing home or membership protection. The main limitation is that a long list of available benefits can be mistaken for a fully selected policy. Check each chosen option and endorsement before comparing price.

Delivery riders should pay particular attention to the standard business-use exclusion. Event riders should compare the competition extension against Bikmo RACE, Laka Complete with the relevant add-on and Yellow Jersey Ultimate for their actual discipline.
