cycleGuard: review summary

RideIn’s assessment: Worth comparing for its value-based lock rules and separately defined options. The trade-offs to check are the claim-value excess bands, away-from-home time limit and the narrower scope of individual travel and e-bike benefits.

Who provides cycleGuard?

cycleGuard’s current footer names Thistle Insurance Services Limited, part of PIB Group, as the intermediary. The June 2026 product summary identifies Bspoke Underwriting acting on behalf of Accelerant Insurance UK Limited; legal-expenses insurance has a separate ARAG arrangement.

Read the document version as carefully as the company name. cycleGuard maintains older wording for earlier purchase and renewal periods, so an archived PDF can produce a misleading comparison for a new customer. Save the current wording and your completed schedule together, then check endorsements for any conditions specific to the bike or rider.

What the base policy and selected options do

The current product information describes insured theft and damage to bicycles and cycle-related accessories, alongside assistance and legal-expenses benefits. Global Travel, Race & Compete, public liability and personal injury are separately selected covers.

For a commuting household, first decide whether the main problem is replacing a stolen bicycle, paying someone else’s damages, or supporting an injured rider. These are different insured events. The product has several useful-looking benefits, but evaluate how each is triggered and whether the allowance is enough for the route you ride. An included recovery label is not proof that every remote trail or foreign trip is covered.

cycleGuard lock requirements by bicycle value

Its current lock sheet accepts a purpose-designed bicycle, scooter or motorcycle lock for bikes up to £1,499. It requires Sold Secure Bronze or above at £1,500–£2,999, Silver or above at £3,000–£4,999 and Gold at £5,000 or more. The frame must be locked directly to a suitable immovable object; a supplied accessory cable cannot substitute for that connection.

Those bands can make it a different practical comparison from providers requiring Gold regardless of bicycle value. They are minimum insurance conditions, not a theft-prevention guarantee. Compare the cost of a compliant lock and the suitability of your parking location, rather than choosing the weakest lock solely because a contract allows it.

The claim-amount bands and replacement basis

The June 2026 wording sets insured-item excesses of £50 for claims below £1,500, £100 for £1,500–£2,999, £150 for £3,000–£4,999 and £200 from £5,000, unless the schedule says otherwise. It separately applies £500 to third-party property-damage liability claims. Bicycle settlement is described as new for old, with clothing treated on market value.

The distinction between bicycle value and claim amount matters. A valuable bike does not automatically place every small repair in the largest excess band. Obtain the schedule’s actual figure and compare a repair, total theft and liability scenario separately. Ask how underinsurance would affect the payment before selecting a lower insured amount.

Global Travel, competition and electric-bike boundaries

The Global Travel option advertises trips up to 60 days, while Race & Compete addresses eligible amateur cycling events. The summary warns that ordinary Cycle Rescue and standard replacement hire do not simply extend overseas. Liability excludes the USA and Canada.

The e-bike requirements specify an eligible electrically assisted pedal cycle and rider age conditions. The current product summary distinguishes fire damage to a qualifying e-bike from third-party liability arising from e-bike battery fire. For a bike stored at home, ask separately about damage to the bicycle and damage to the building or other people’s property. Those are materially different insurance questions.

Making a claim and comparing alternatives

cycleGuard says theft or malicious damage should be reported to police. Its claim instructions warn against unauthorised repairs, replacements or liability settlements and provide an online reporting route as well as a claims team contact.

Retain receipts for any claimed rescue expenditure, and check the procedure applicable to your policy date. A useful comparison is with Sundays for fixed-excess choices, ETA for rescue and its higher-excess situations, and Bikmo for product selection. Our assessment concerns documents and practical fit; it does not treat the provider’s published service targets as a guaranteed payout date or a tested claims-performance score.
