Pedalsure: review summary

RideIn’s assessment: Consider it when you want to select bicycle and rider protection separately. Budget for the percentage-based bike-claim excess, complete the required evidence steps and understand the Guernsey underwriting arrangements before buying.

Who arranges Pedalsure and who is the insurer?

The current terms name Pedalsure No3 Limited as an appointed representative of Pro MGA Solutions Ltd and Dukes House Insurance Limited as the insurer. They say Pedalsure and the insurer share ownership. The insurer is regulated by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission rather than being described as a UK-authorised insurer.

Do not confuse the intermediary’s UK regulatory relationship with the insurer’s compensation or complaints arrangements. The published cover summary says the underwriter does not participate in the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Read the relevant contract information and seek clarification if insurer-failure protection is important to your decision.

Separate the bicycle cover from rider protection

Pedalsure’s current summary describes three selectable sections: personal accident, the bicycle and personal liability. The bike section covers insured theft and damage; rider benefits depend on the sections and limits selected. Overseas and competition use require additional attention.

This is useful when you already hold liability elsewhere or want to compare injury benefits separately. It also creates room for an incomplete comparison: a bike-only price should not be set against a rival quote containing rider benefits and called equivalent. Use a written checklist of selected sections, limits and excluded activities before comparing the total premium.

Security, evidence and the start of cover

The published cover summary requires suitable approved locks, with stronger protection above its value threshold, and instructs customers to upload bicycle photographs within 30 days of purchase. The document library includes the approved-lock list alongside the wording.

Treat post-purchase evidence as part of setting up cover. Take clear photographs of the whole bicycle, frame number and unusual components, then verify that the uploads completed. For a used or custom build, ask which ownership and valuation records are acceptable before assuming a bank transfer or handwritten receipt will suffice. A successful premium payment does not resolve every evidential requirement.

The excess grows with a larger bicycle claim

Pedalsure publishes a bike-section excess of £75 or 10% of the claim payment value, whichever is greater. On an assumed £3,000 claim payment value, that formula gives a £300 contribution. This is an illustration of the published formula, not a promise about a claim settlement.

That percentage is particularly relevant to a valuable road bike or e-bike. Compare the money you would contribute after a large theft as well as the yearly premium. Also ask how replacement, nominated suppliers and cash settlements work for a discontinued bicycle; the outcome can depend on more than the headline maximum per bike.

E-bikes, family riders and overseas events

The policy requires an electric bicycle to meet the applicable UK electrically assisted pedal-cycle rules. Do not treat a throttle conversion, derestricted motor or other modification as automatically accepted. Describe the exact machine.

For a family or event rider, map the person, activity and equipment separately. Permission for another household member to ride a bicycle does not establish that the personal accident and liability sections cover that person. For a triathlon or overseas race, ask about the actual discipline, transition storage, transport and emergency medical cover rather than relying on a general reference to racing.

Claims and complaints: follow the correct route

The published wording sets out the evidence and notification requirements for different claim sections. Keep the policy number, ownership records, photos and incident information together, contact the claims team promptly and obtain instructions before committing to repair or hire costs.

The terms distinguish service complaints from complaints about cover or claims. The latter have a different escalation route described in the wording, including the Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman. That separation is a useful reason to retain both the intermediary terms and the insurance wording. Our review does not score the speed or acceptance rate of Pedalsure claims: we have not conducted a purchase or claim test.
