Waterproof, water-resistant and rain-cover protected
Waterproof material is only one part of a dry bag. Needle holes, ordinary zips and an open flap can let water reach the contents even when the face fabric does not absorb much. The most convincing designs combine coated material with welded or sealed seams and a closure that folds or rolls over the opening.
A DWR treatment is useful in showers because it encourages water to bead and run off, but the finish wears and does not seal the whole bag. A fitted rain cover gives another barrier, although wind, wheel spray and uncovered back panels can still create routes for water.
- For laptops or medication, use a second dry pouch even inside a waterproof bag.
- Roll closures the number of times specified by the maker.
- Keep grit away from coated fabric and inspect fold lines, seams and buckles regularly.
Choose capacity from a packing list
Twelve litres is compact; it suits a small daily load but leaves little room for shoes, winter clothing or shopping. Eighteen to 25 litres is the useful middle ground for many commuters. Thirty litres makes bulky kit easier, while a 39-litre courier sack is a specialist choice that can tempt riders to carry too much weight.
Put dense objects close to the back, stop hard corners pressing into the spine and tighten every loose strap. If the regular load is heavy or the route is long, a rack-mounted bag can be more comfortable than wearing the weight.
A waterproof bag is not automatically laptop-ready
A sleeve stops a computer moving and adds impact protection; waterproof construction keeps rain away. Those are separate jobs. Check the stated screen size, but also measure the device's full width and thickness because nominal laptop sizes do not describe the chassis.
Keep the laptop away from tools, locks and hard chargers, and do not place it directly against the bottom panel. A slim waterproof pouch adds useful protection if a closure is left imperfectly rolled or an external pocket is only water-resistant.
