Model an annual e-bike budget
This spreads the purchase and one battery replacement across the ownership period. Change every value to match your own UK quote and electricity tariff.
Charging includes a 12% allowance for losses. Lock, accessories, finance, Cycle to Work tax effects, unexpected repairs and resale value are not included unless you add them to the input figures.
Electricity is only one small line
One full charge uses roughly the battery’s kilowatt-hours plus conversion losses. Multiply battery Wh by full-charge equivalents, divide by 1,000 and apply your tariff. Partial charges add up; two half charges are approximately one full-charge equivalent.
The bigger ownership costs are often depreciation, battery replacement, servicing and parts. A cheap bike with proprietary electronics and no UK spares can be more expensive to keep running than a better-supported model.
Wear depends on weight, power and weather
E-bikes can wear brake pads, tyres, chains and cassettes faster because they are heavier, travel farther and apply extra drivetrain load. Winter grit and rain increase cleaning and inspection needs.
- Check tyre pressure, damage, wheel security and both brakes before riding.
- Shift down early and ease pedal pressure during changes on a mid-drive.
- Measure chain wear rather than waiting for poor shifting.
- Keep connectors clean and follow the maker’s washing instructions.
- Budget for workshop diagnostics when the fault is electrical or firmware-related.
Price the battery before buying
Ask for the current cost, part number, warranty terms and expected availability of the exact replacement pack and charger. Do not assume that a visually similar battery will be compatible.
Read the UK battery safety and replacement guide before buying used or ordering a third-party pack.
Security, insurance and schemes
Add a lock that meets any insurer requirement, secure storage, removable-accessory protection and possibly tracking. Insurance may be separate, added to a home policy or unnecessary for some owners; compare exclusions, excess, lock rules, away-from-home cover and battery treatment.
Cycle to Work can change the effective acquisition cost, but the employer’s scheme, salary arrangements, ownership transfer and eligible equipment decide the outcome. Use the current official guidance and scheme quote rather than applying a generic percentage.
