Direct bicycle loan or Novuna retail finance?

With a direct loan, the borrowing and the bicycle purchase are separate transactions. Once funded, you pay the seller and repay the lender. That makes the route relevant when comparing a used gravel bike from an individual against a new bike in a shop: the seller does not need to arrange the loan.

Novuna also supplies finance through bicycle retailers. That checkout route is attached to the retailer’s basket and available offers. Do not carry the direct-loan headline rate across to a retailer’s finance calculator. Ask for the exact agreement, cash price and total payable for each route.

Who can apply and what does the headline APR mean?

The bicycle-loan page lists age 21+, good credit history, a bank or building society account and at least three years’ UK residence. Employment, self-employment or pension-income requirements apply; that page specifies income greater than £10,000. Meeting these conditions does not guarantee acceptance.

The 6.9% representative APR is for a much larger borrowing band than many everyday bicycle purchases. A £1,500 commuter bike should be compared using a £1,500 quote, rather than a £7,500 example. Increasing the debt simply to enter a lower advertised rate band can leave you paying more pounds overall.

Where the flexibility helps — and where it can cost more

A private purchase can widen the choice of frame sizes and older builds, but finance does not establish that a used bicycle is sound. Budget for inspection, worn tyres, drivetrain parts and, on an e-bike, battery condition. A low purchase price plus immediate repairs may be worse value than a more expensive inspected alternative.

Novuna’s detailed repayment guide says early settlement can include up to 58 days’ interest, despite no penalty fee. If your plan relies on clearing the balance after a bonus or sale, ask for a settlement illustration instead of assuming interest stops immediately. Compare it with the repayment flexibility on your other quotes.

RideIn’s assessment and alternatives

The practical attraction is seller choice. The main trade-off is paying interest when an affordable interest-free offer or employer scheme could cover the same need. Choose the bicycle and realistic budget first; then compare borrowing for that amount.

Our assessment is based on published product and repayment information, rather than a test of Novuna’s application, acceptance rate or customer service. No approval or rate is promised. For a commuter, ask payroll about the scheme and end-of-hire arrangements before deciding.
