Is Obscur genuinely new?
Yes. Intradrive’s 8 October 2026 launch release identifies Obscur as a new French e-MTB brand and says the Enyx is its first bicycle. Independent reports from Pinkbike and Vojo published during Roc d’Azur separately describe Obscur as a new brand making its debut with the Enyx.
This is more than a new model or a familiar name entering another country. The evidence links a new consumer bicycle identity to a first product launch. Obscur’s own website was published in 2026 and now presents the Enyx family, manufacturing information and support pages under that identity.
Who is behind Obscur?
Obscur was created by Workshape, a composites company based in La Roche-de-Glun in the Drôme. The launch material says the team has about twenty years’ experience making carbon-fibre parts for aeronautics, aerospace and fundamental research.
Obscur says it makes the Enyx frame, production moulds and carbon components in its own workshops, using high-modulus pre-impregnated carbon sourced in Europe. Those are manufacturer claims rather than RideIn factory observations, but the named company and facility provide substantially more traceability than an unsupported marketplace label.
What is the Enyx?
The Enyx is a carbon all-mountain e-bike with 150mm rear travel, a 160mm fork and mixed wheels: 29in front and 27.5in rear. Its unusual layout places the motor-gearbox and a removable 840Wh battery low and close to the centre of the bike. Obscur claims the battery weighs 3.15kg; that figure has not been independently measured by RideIn.
The current Obscur website lists Enyx and Enyx Ultra complete builds plus an Enyx kit. Early launch material used different build labels, so buyers should use the live manufacturer specification and quote for the exact configuration rather than combining details from pre-launch coverage.
Obscur also says the carbon frame can be repaired in its workshops and the battery can be rebuilt. Those promises are potentially valuable on a high-end e-MTB, but owners should obtain the written warranty, crash-replacement terms, labour arrangements and shipping costs for their country before ordering.
Why the Intradrive GD8 matters
The Enyx is one of the first production bicycles announced around Intradrive’s GD8. The Edinburgh-built unit combines a motor and electronically shifted eight-speed gearbox inside the frame, removing the conventional rear derailleur and cassette.
Intradrive publishes a 250W rated output, 700W peak output, 480% gear range, approximately 0.1-second shifts and a 4.5kg system weight. It says the gearbox can shift under load or while stationary and calls for an oil change every 10,000km. These are supplier specifications, not RideIn test findings.
The sealed arrangement protects the gears and reduces unsprung mass at the rear wheel. It also makes long-term ownership dependent on a young drive-system supplier, its software, spare parts and trained service support. Buyers should ask who can diagnose and repair the GD8 locally.
Can you buy Obscur in the UK?
RideIn could not verify an official UK distributor, UK dealer, GBP checkout or an exact Obscur Enyx sold on Amazon UK. The manufacturer website is French and presents the current range in euros. This page therefore contains no affiliate buying link.
The Scottish-built Intradrive system makes the bike relevant to UK readers, but UK component origin does not establish UK retail support for the complete bicycle. A buyer considering a direct import should confirm delivery, VAT and duties, returns, frame and battery shipping, charger compatibility and who pays transport for warranty work.
UK legality and ownership checks
A 250W rated motor is only one part of Great Britain’s EAPC test. Assistance must also cut off by 15.5mph, the cycle must have usable pedals and the required marking and throttle conditions must be met. RideIn has not found a UK-specific Enyx configuration or compliance document, so readers should not infer road legality from the motor rating alone.
- Request the exact model, build, size and country configuration in writing.
- Confirm the assisted-speed cut-off and all throttle or walk-assist behaviour.
- Obtain the complete warranty and crash-repair process for a UK address.
- Ask where GD8 service, battery rebuilding and software support are available.
- Check replacement battery, charger and proprietary component prices.
- Treat published weights and performance figures as manufacturer claims until independently tested.
How the launch was checked
Primary launch material from Intradrive identifies Obscur as a new partner brand with its first bicycle. Obscur’s current site supplies the manufacturer claims. Independent cycling publications corroborate the debut at Roc d’Azur.
