Choosing for your commute
An inner tube is an easy repeat purchase only when its size is clear. Read the ETRTO marking on your tyre, such as 37-622: the first number is nominal width and the second is the bead-seat diameter. Match that diameter and ensure the width falls within the tube manufacturer's stated range.
Next, match the valve type and length to the wheel. Presta is the slender valve with a small screw at the tip; Schrader is wider and resembles a car tyre valve. A tube with the right tyre size but the wrong valve can still be unsuitable for your rim or pump.

Tyre size
Use the actual sidewall marking and manufacturer's compatibility range. Marketing labels such as 28-inch are not precise enough on their own.
Valve and rim
Match valve type, make sure it passes through the rim and leave enough exposed length for your pump head.

Check pack quantity and material. Conventional butyl, latex and TPU tubes have different fitting and repair requirements.

Can a 700C tube fit every commuter bike?
No. It must cover the tyre's exact diameter and width, with a valve suitable for the rim. Many folding and mountain bikes use different diameters.
Should I carry a spare tube even if I have patches?
A correctly sized spare can be useful when a tube cannot be repaired promptly. You still need a suitable pump, tyre levers if required, and knowledge of how to remove and refit the wheel.
