Estimate a realistic range band
Enter the stored energy and the conditions of your UK journey. The result is deliberately a range, not a promise.
The model uses about 11.6Wh/km at the centre estimate. Wind, tyre pressure, surface, riding speed, stop-start traffic, system efficiency and rider input can move the real result outside this band. Keep a reserve for the return journey.
Start with watt-hours, not an ‘up to’ claim
Battery capacity in watt-hours is the most useful common starting point. If only voltage and amp-hours are stated, multiply volts by amp-hours to obtain nominal watt-hours. A 36V 10Ah battery is therefore about 360Wh.
Ageing and cold reduce usable energy, while some systems retain a protective reserve. The calculator lets you reduce battery health rather than pretending every pack still has its original capacity.
Plan the difficult return leg
British winter temperatures, strong wind, wet roads, hills and repeated stops can turn an easy outward journey into an energy-intensive return. Use the harder direction, include luggage, choose the assistance level you will really use and leave a reserve.
For a bike you are considering, compare the result with its full RideIn catalogue entry and ask the seller how its published range was tested.
How to improve useful range
- Keep tyres at an appropriate pressure for the tyre, load and surface.
- Use a suitable mechanical gear and a steady cadence on climbs.
- Reduce unnecessary carried weight without removing safety equipment.
- Store and charge the battery within the manufacturer’s temperature limits.
- Use lower assistance where it remains comfortable and safe.
- Replace a damaged battery rather than trying to recover range from it.
