What makes a good cycle route?

A useful cycle route is not simply the shortest line between two places. It needs to match the rider, bicycle, time of day and purpose of the journey. A commuter may accept a short section of busy road to save ten minutes, while a family ride may prioritise continuous traffic-free paths even when that adds distance.

Start by deciding what matters most: low traffic, a predictable surface, modest climbing, directness or scenery. Route-planning software can compare options, but it cannot know which junctions you personally find stressful or whether an apparently minor track is muddy after heavy rain.

The strongest plan therefore combines a bicycle-specific route suggestion with a deliberate review of the map, current conditions and any sections where the data is uncertain.

Choose a route for the rider and bicycle

Set the route around the least confident rider in the group. Experience in traffic, ability to start on a hill, likely pace and confidence at large roundabouts all matter more than an optimistic average speed. For a new commuter, a calm route that is easy to remember is often more valuable than a technically faster one.

The bicycle changes the sensible choice. Narrow road tyres favour consistent tarmac. Wider hybrid or gravel tyres make towpaths and compacted tracks more realistic. A mountain bike can use rougher rights of way, but legal access still depends on the route rather than the bicycle. Cargo bikes, trailers and adapted cycles need enough width at barriers, suitable turning space and manageable gradients.

For an e-bike, calculate the full distance and climbing against realistic battery range. Cold weather, heavy loads, headwinds, low tyre pressure and high assistance can all reduce the distance available from a charge.

Compare quiet, fast and mixed-surface options

Generate more than one route where possible. A quiet-road option may use residential streets, filtered neighbourhoods and cycle tracks. A faster option may remain on larger roads for longer. A gravel option can introduce towpaths, forest tracks or unsurfaced links that are enjoyable in dry conditions but slower or unsuitable after rain.

Compare the alternatives section by section rather than accepting a single summary score. Look for where each route crosses a river, railway, motorway or steep-sided valley, because these constraints concentrate riders onto a small number of bridges and junctions. A route that looks calm overall can still contain one difficult crossing that determines whether it is suitable.

Read road type and junctions carefully

Zoom in at roundabouts, multi-lane approaches, slip roads and places where a protected track ends. Check which side of the road a cycle track occupies, how it crosses side roads and whether reaching it requires an awkward turn. A coloured line on a map can hide a complicated change of road position.

Satellite and street-level imagery can help explain road layout, but images may be old. Local authority traffic orders, roadworks information and signs on the ground take precedence. Never assume that a route remains open merely because it appears in an app.

The Department for Transport’s cycle-infrastructure guidance explains why separation, junction treatment and route continuity matter, although it is written primarily for authorities and designers rather than as a promise that a particular route meets those standards.

Check surface, width and physical barriers

Surface descriptions in mapping data are often incomplete. ‘Path’ does not tell you whether a section is smooth tarmac, loose gravel, deep mud or a narrow line through vegetation. Treat unknown surface data cautiously, particularly on rural rides and during winter.

Consider tyre width, recent weather and the consequences of having to turn around. Canal towpaths can change character abruptly. Former railway paths are often consistent, while bridleways can range from firm estate roads to deeply rutted tracks. Steps, gates, A-frames, chicanes and narrow bridges may make an otherwise legal route impractical for trailers, cargo bikes or non-standard cycles.

Use elevation to find the demanding sections

Total climbing is helpful, but the location and steepness of a climb matter more. A gradual 100-metre gain over several kilometres feels very different from the same height gained on one short ramp. Inspect the elevation profile alongside the map to see whether climbing occurs on a calm lane, rough track or busy junction approach.

Contour lines and gradient data can contain errors, especially around bridges, tunnels and cuttings. Use them to compare routes rather than treating every metre as exact. On a loaded bike, tandem or cargo cycle, also consider the descent: steep gradients, loose surfaces and frequent junctions increase braking demands.

For a regular journey, it may be worth riding a longer valley route in one direction and a shorter hilly route in the other. There is no requirement for the outward and return routes to match.

Confirm access and the rules that apply

In England and Wales, a public bridleway normally permits cycling, while an ordinary public footpath does not provide a general right to cycle. Scotland has a different access framework, subject to responsible use. Access can also be affected by local byelaws, temporary closures and landowner permissions, so check the relevant authority when the status is uncertain.

On roads and shared routes, follow current signs and the Highway Code. The official rules for cyclists cover road position, junctions, roundabouts, crossings and riding in groups. Shared-use space still requires an appropriate speed and consideration for people walking, wheeling, riding horses or using mobility aids.

Do not infer legality from a routing line alone. Digital maps contain errors, and a routing engine may choose a way whose access tags are incomplete or out of date.

Plan for weather, daylight and disruption

Check an hourly forecast rather than a single daily symbol. Wind direction can materially change the effort required on open roads, while heavy rain affects visibility, braking and the condition of unsurfaced paths. The Met Office advises extra care around surface water and localised flooding when cycling in heavy rain.

A route that works in daylight may feel very different after dark. Consider lighting, passive surveillance, opening hours for parks and towpaths, and whether a secluded section has a practical alternative. Mapping information about street lighting is incomplete, so do not assume a route is illuminated because no warning appears.

For longer rides, identify railway stations, sheltered places and a shorter return option before leaving. Carry sufficient charge for navigation, but keep a route summary or GPX file available in case mobile coverage is poor.

Test an unfamiliar route before relying on it

Ride a new commuting route outside peak time and in good visibility. Slow down at uncertain junctions, confirm the surface and note where the route is difficult to follow. Test the return direction separately because gradients, legal turns and road positioning can change.

Record what actually caused delay. Repeated traffic lights, barriers, school-run congestion and awkward crossings can make a shorter route slower in practice. Adjust one or two shaping points in the mapper and compare again.

A reconnaissance ride is particularly important before leading children or a group, riding at night, towing a trailer or depending on the route to reach a train or appointment.

  • Choose a low-pressure time for the first ride
  • Stop somewhere safe before checking navigation
  • Note seasonal gates, flooding and poor surfaces
  • Check secure parking and the final approach
  • Keep a simple alternative for closures or mechanical trouble

Save, share and navigate without distraction

Download the final route as a GPX track if you want to use it on a compatible phone, cycle computer or navigation app. Check how that device handles recalculation: some will silently replace your planned route with their own when you miss a turn.

Share the route with anyone riding with you and identify meeting points rather than relying only on a moving location pin. For a group ride, communicate the distance, expected surface, climbing and any sections where riders may need to dismount.

Mount a phone securely or use audible prompts. Do not interact with a device while moving. If directions become unclear, stop in a safe place before checking the map. Navigation should reduce distraction, not create another source of it.
