Cycle to work in Amsterdam

More than a third of Amsterdam bicycle to work

Cycle to work in AmsterdamMore than a third of those working in Amsterdam cycle to work, according to new research by the local Amsterdam Bureau of Research and Statistics.

The report explains that those living and working in the city centre were the most likely to cycle in. On the other hand, those employed outside the city were more likely to drive to work.

Comparing this with the UK makes for depressing reading. Despite the impact of the Cycle to Work Scheme and Barclays Bikes, the figure for London, our capital city, sits at an astonishingly low 3%-9%, depending on which statistics you believe.

Bicycle commuting in London, and elsewhere in the UK, is on the rise and there have been huge improvements in infrastructure over the past few years. But, there is still a long way to go before we can achieve the health benefits, as well as the traffic and pollution reduction witnessed across the Channel in Holland.
